Alicia’s story
Alicia grew up in in northern San Diego county and constantly moved around California for holidays and family visits. With family based in Los Angeles and the Bay Area, Alicia is familiar with all three major metropolitan areas of the state.
Alicia lived in San Jose for two and a half years while studying for her Bachelor’s degree in journalism from San Jose State. She received her degree a semester early with Latin honors and a minor in photography. Currently studying for her Master’s in journalism at USC, Alicia hopes to further her education both in and out of the classroom.
Furthering her lived education, Alicia has traveled the world, gaining cultural understanding and experience that informs her reporting. In October 2024, she attended a week-long press visit to the European Union headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. She was one of the twelve American students studying a master’s degree in journalism selected to attend this program. Alicia gained a deep understanding of the culture, mechanisms and politics of the EU and the surrounding community in Brussels.
Alicia has managed two student publications and has contributed dozens of articles, photos and graphics since her start in journalism. Her eventual goal is to travel the world reporting on underrepresented communities and to give back by teaching at the university level.
